Proper ID is required for all notarizations. All identification cards must be ORIGINAL, contain a photo, physical description, signature and serial number. As of January 1, 2008, notaries are no longer permitted to identify an individual based upon personal knowledge. Identification procedures are mandated by the California Secretary of State. Satisfactory Evidence
Evidence of identity can be established by presentation to the notary of paper identification documents. Any one of the following documents, provided that the identification document is current or has been issued within five years is acceptable:
California Driver's License
California Identification card
Inmate ID card
Other States Driver's License
Other States Identification card
US Passport
US Military Identification card
Canadian or Mexican Driver's License
Foreign Passports stamped by US Customs
Two Credible Witnesses (if individual does not have an acceptable ID)
Prior to Your Appointment
Please be certain of the following:
The identification document you will be using to prove your identity is one the above and is not expired. The document must be an original and not a photocopy. You may not use a temporary license or ID card issued by DMV. Temporary license and ID cards do not contain an original photo on.
The name you will be signing on the document must match the name shown on the documentation you are using to prove your ID. An ID in your maiden name along with a marriage license evidencing your married name is not acceptable. In the event the names on your ID and the document being signed do not match, please be prepared to have two credible witnesses available to identify you. Your credible witnesses must have proper ID as described above.
The document to be notarized is complete. If there are blanks in the document, please fill them in prior to your appointment. If you have questions about how to complete the document, contact the person who drafted or requested the document.
Signer must be able to communicate with the notary public. If the signer is a non-English speaking individual who does not fluently speak English, please find a notary who speaks your language. If you need help locating a Spanish-speaking notary, please complete the Request an Appointment or Information form below. I will be able to provide you with the name and contact information of a Spanish-speaking notary.
